I’m at Brunetti cafe paying public holiday prices for a crema di caffe. It is deliciously cool on this warm midsummer day.

I bought a book with my flatmate’s staff discount for AUD9 called The narrow road to the deep north and other travel sketches by Matsuo Bashō and translated by Nobuyuki Yuasa.

Some of the poems:

By Yamabe-no-Akahito:
Come with a light heart
To pick some violets,
I found it difficult to leave
And slept overnight
Here in this spring field.

And some of the poems:

By Moritake:
To the moon in the sky
If you put a handle,
It will certainly be
An excellent fan.

And the translator, who recalled:
When the work was a little more advanced, a more sympathetic friend questioned whether I had the same command of English as Bashō did of the language in which he wrote.
