Locals dislike it when foreigners move to a place and then complain about how other places are better than their place, so let's do a little of that.

The public transport system in Melbourne could use a bit of work. The trams are adorable, and I like their little ding, but the more I catch them, the more they frustrate me. I don't suggest getting rid of them (could you imagine) but I think lessening the city's reliance on them would not be a bad thing. Brisbane has a nice system with bus-only lanes and bus-only highways and a nice underground bus exchange and train station in the city. Melbourne's train system looks pretty alright (I have not caught it to say for sure). I think the problem that Melbourne's public transport has is not the trams themselves but that the trams have to compete with the rest of traffic for space. Getting in and out of the city would be much easier if trams had their own lanes with fewer traffic lights.

In Brisbane, using the busway, you can go from UQ Lakes to King George square in 14 minutes. This is a distance of six kilometres (probably) and the trip costs AUD3.25.

In Melbourne, taking a tram, you can go from Brunswick to the State Library of Victoria, a distance of 6.2km, in 26 minutes, and the trip costs AUD4.30.

I think that's why a lot of people are choosing to move into small apartments in the Melbourne downtown.
